Week o’ Nellies

Hey, folks–

Man, oh man, do we have some sweet gigs for your viewing and listening pleasure next week–all over the state, too (if by “all over the state,” you mean the Bay Area and Fresno area).

On Saturday and Sunday, we’re playing the Hobbs Grove Bluegrass Festival with lots of great bands including our good friends Dalton Mountain Gang (just named the Emerging Artist of the Year at Bluegrassin’ in the Foothills in Plymouth!) and Deep Elem as well as plenty of other fine bands whose acquaintances we have yet to make, like the Anderson Family Band and the Brombies. Molly Tuttle will be sitting in with us on guitar. After two sets here, we’ll be all good and practiced up for…

Monday at Amnesia! The Nellies and 49 Special will be sharing the stage at Amnesia. Get there early, ’cause the Nellies are on first since we need our beauty sleep for…

Wednesday’s appearance on KGO radio. Tune in to 810 AM at 5:40 on Wednesday to hear the Nellies chat a bit and pick a song on the Wednesday Cafe. Our good pal Katy Rexford will be sitting in on fiddle, and Molly Tuttle will be joining us on guitar. That appearance is to promote…

Saturday’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass show! Yes, folks, it all leads up to this. The Nellies are playing on the Porch stage at 12:30 pm on Saturday, and you’re all going to come watch us and cheer us on. Molly Tuttle will be sitting in on guitar with us. It’s pretty much every band’s dream to be able to play they’re favorite festival, and this is it for us.

See our gigs page for more details.

No Nellies at Amnesia this Monday

Hey, folks,

The Nellies are taking a month off from our regular fourth Monday show at Amnesia for August. But we’ll be back in September, the Monday before the amazing Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (catch our set there, too!).

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

hardlystrictlyHey, folks–

You may have heard this already, but the Barefoot Nellies are joining Tim O’Brien, Hazel Dickens, Gillian Welch, Doc Watson, Jorma Kaukonen, and many others at this year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

Mark your calendars for October 2, 3, and 4 this year.

Nellies and the Earl Brothers at Amnesia!

Hi, folks–

Come on down to Amnesia on June 22 to see a fun, fun double bill with us and the Earl Brothers, our favorite old-timey-ish band. Our sunny bluegrass songs about love and prison will be a nice counterpoint to their dark bluegrass/old-timey songs about love and prison.

Nellies are going on at 8:30, Earl Brothers on at 10.

Check out our gigs page for more details.

Barely Nellies Memorial Day Gig!

Hey, folks–

We’ve got a special treat lined up for you all tonight. While Betsy and Prentice are off gallavanting around for Memorial Day, Jess and Nicole rounded up three of our favorite pickers — Tom Lucas, John Kael, and Annie Staninec — to join us for a rollicking Barely Nellies lineup.

But wait, there’s more. Since we’re a girl band and all fickle-like, we invited some more of our bluegrass pals to come up and pick and sing one or two or three or so with us in the second set. It’s gonna be fun. Come on down!

Tonight! Monday, May 25
8:30 p.m. till wicked late
Amnesia
853 Valencia St., San Francisco
Free!

xoxo,
The Nellies

Support a good cause

Hey, folks–

We just updated our gigs page, but we wanted to call attention to one very special show coming up: the fundraiser for Big City Mountaineers on July 9. This summer, the Nellies’ original guitar player, Erika Walther, is going on a four-day hike to North Palisades Peak in the Sierra Nevadas to help raise money for BCM. She put together this amazing event to help with her fundraising efforts. You can read more about it on Erika’s donation page.

So far, Kathy Kallick and the Nellies are scheduled to perform, but I know Erika’s lining up some other great bands. So put it on your calendar, and if you can’t make it, consider donating to Erika’s cause.

Please take our picture

Hey, folks–

First, a quick reminder: we’re playing the FIFTH Monday, not the fourth Monday, this month at Amnesia. So check us out with 49 Special on March 30 (and stay for the debut of the George Strait singalong that night).

Back to business. Occasionally, the Nellies like to post photos on our site. They look nice, especially in these blog posts. However, all our band photos are very, very old.

So, we’re asking you, dear fans, to please take our photo. Click away, flash or no flash, at gigs. Then let us know where you post them. On Facebook, you can put a message on our profile page. On Flickr, you can add them to the Barefoot Nellies group. Let us know how (or if) we can use them. When we do, we’ll do our best to always link to your website and credit you. Thank you!

Updating our mailing list

Hi, folks–

As part of our whole website changeroo, we’re also moving our mailing list to a different (and better) service. One thing to note, you’re going to get an email asking for confirmation. You have three choices:

  1. Click the “keep me on this list” button. That will take you to the ReverbNation site (the company that’s hosting our email list). You will have to fill in some information, such as your zip code and age.
  2. If you don’t want to fill in the info (and we certainly don’t blame you if you don’t), then ignore the email. Three days later, your address will be considered “approved.”
  3. To unsubscribe, click the “unsubscribe” link.

That’s it! Easy peasy! If you have any questions, email nicole [at] barefootnellies.com.

Nellies FAQ

Hey, folks–

Here’s a little gem we recovered from our old website. Enjoy!

Nellies FAQ

Q: Hey, if you gals are called the BAREFOOT Nellies, why are you wearing shoes?

A: It’s just a name (and yes, we’re named after the song). There are several reasons, actually.

  1. We think it’s too gimmicky to go barefoot, just as we’re not going to all get our names legally changed to Nellie. That would be like the Donnas all going by Donna and their last initial, or the Spice Girls naming themselves after spices. Oh, wait…
  2. Some of those stage floors are gross. Imagine you’d been spilling beer on your carpet every night for the past four years, then imagine you had never vacuumed or cleaned it. Would you want to walk on it barefoot?
  3. We rely on footwear to even out our wildly disparate heights.

Switching to a new Web host

Hi, folks–

We’re currently in the process of moving our Web site to a new host (pardon the mess).

Since you’re probably looking for our upcoming gigs, here they are:

Until we finish tidying up, feel free to email us for anything else.
